Brain Flashcards
Meninges
Protective layer that cushion the brain against shock
Skull
Forms a tough casing around the brain
Cerebellum
Helps control balance and movement
Medulla
Controls breathing, heartbeat, blood pressure and vomiting
Cerebrum
Where thinking occurs and memories are stored
Corpus callosum
Links the two sides of the brain
Hypothalamus
Controls sleep, hunger, and body temperature
Pituitary gland
Controls the release of hormones
Thalamus
Receives sensory nerves signals and sends them to the cerebrum
What is the left side of the cerebrum responsible for
The logical, rational aspects of your thinking, as well as for grammer and vocabulary
- scientific thinking
- mathematical skills
- language
- rational thought
- writing skills
Left visual cortex
Processes signals from the right eye
Right eye
Collects data on light-sensitive cells that is processed in the opposite side of the brain - the left visual cortex in the occipital lobe
Right optic nerve
Carries information from the right eye to the left visual cortex
Frontal lobe
Vital to thought, personality, speech, and emotion
Temporal lobe
Where sounds are recognized, and where long-term memories are stored
Parietal lobe
Gathers together information from senses such as touch and taste
Occipital lobe
Processes information from the eyes to create images
Cerebellum
Tucked beneath the cerebrum’s two halves, this structure coordinates the body’s muscles
Spinal cord
Joins the brain to the system of nerves that runs throughout the body
What is the function of the right side of the cerebrum
Where creativity and intuition take place, and is also used to understand shapes and motion
- spatial skills
- art
- imagination
- art
- music
- insight
Neurons
brain cells that link up to pass electric signals to each other
