Brain Flashcards
amygdala
grey matter in both cerebral hemispheres, involved with emotion, especially fear.
associative areas
responsible for thoughts, memory, and learning.
basal nuclei
deep within the white matter, works with the limbic system
brainstem
composed of 3 structures, regulate heart rate, breathing and BP
cerebellum
located in the hindbrain, coordinates voluntary movements.
cerebrum/cerebral cortex
thin layer of grey matter covered by meninges
corpus callosum
c-shaped nerve fiber bundle that stretches across the midline of the brain
cranial nerves (12)
sensory and motor functions
frontal lobe
lobe located after the prefrontal
general interpretive area
receives info from sensory associative areas, comprehends what is read and heard.
hippocampus
embedded in the temporal lobe, role in learning and memory
hypothalamus
region of the forebrain below the thalamus, coordinates autonomic nerve system, pituitary, thirst/hunger, sleep
insula
deep in the lateral sulcus
integrative areas
involved completely in the CNS
limbic system
involved with emotions and memory, includes the thalamus, hypothalamus, frontal lobe, olfactory bulb, amygdala and hippocampus
