BRACHYTHERAPY Flashcards
Dose is delivered over a short period of time and the sources are removed after the prescribed dose has been reached
TEMPORARY
Emit radiation at a rate of 0.4 - 2 G/Hr. Commonly used for cancers of the oral cavity, oropharynx, sarcomas and prostate cancer.
LOW DOSE RATE
Brachytherapy can be characterized according to these three main factors:
SOURCE IMPLANTS
TREATMENT DURATION
DOSE RATE
the source is placed directly in the target tissue of the affected site, such as the prostate or breast
INTERSTITIAL BRACHYTHERAPY
Photon emitting radionuclide which is previously widely used for the treatment of gynecological cancer.
CESIUM 137
Stages of brachytherapy procedure
INITIAL PLANNING
INSERTION AND IMAGING OF THE APPLICATOR
CREATION OF VIRTUAL PATIENT
TREATMENT DELIVERY
The most common type of treatment for prostate cancer in which the seeds stay inside the prostate and put out a small amount of radiation for several months.
LOW DOSE RADIATION BRACHYTHERAPY
A type of radiation therapy used to treat cancer, involving the placement of radioactive material, either temporarily or permanently, directly inside the body.
BRACHYTHERAPY
The early pioneers who utilized brachytherapy applications.
MARGARET CLEAVES
HUGH HAMPTON YOUNG, BENJAMIN BARRINGER
GEOFREY KEYNES
A French Physicist who studied the effects of radioactivity and suggested to his friend that radiation could be used to treat cancer.
PIERRE CURIE
Involves the placement of a radiation source in a space next to a target tissue.
CONTACT
Involves short pulses of radiation, typically once an hour, to simulate the overall rate and effectiveness of LDR treatment.
PULSED-DOSE RATE(PDR)
A computerized medical device that drives a small radioactive source through catheters to predetermined dwell positions for a specific time in a patient’s body during brachytherapy.
AFTERLOADER MACHINE
A device used to hold radioactive sources in place during brachytherapy.
APPLICATOR
The source is placed into a body lumen such as the trachea and esophagus
INTRALUMENAL
