Brachial Plexus Flashcards
What is the brachial plexus formed by?
anterior primary rami of C5-T1, and occasionally some of C4 and/or T2
What does the brachial plexus supply?
Upper extremities
Where does the Brachial Plexus travel?
over the first rib into the axilla
Directionally how does the brachial plexus travel?
medial to lateral
What are the subdivisions of the plexus in order?
roots, trunks, divisions, cords, and terminal nerves
What does each root receive from the sympathetic trunk?
Gray Ramus Communicans
What do the roots pass between before reaching into the posterior triangle?
Anterior and Middle scalene muscles
Where are the roots located?
Posterior and superior to the subclavian artery
What roots form the superior trunk?
C5&C6
What roots combine to form the middle trunk?
C7 only
What roots combine to form the inferior trunk?
C8&T1
What do trunks pass over before reaching the axilla?
Rib 1
What does each trunk split into?
Anterior and posterior divisions
What does the anterior division supply?
Anterior compartments of the arm and forearm
What does the posterior division supply?
Posterior compartments of the arm and forearm
What are the cords of the brachial plexus named in relation to?
axillary artery
The anterior divisions of the superior and middle trunks forms what?
lateral cord
lateral cord contains fibers from what?
C5, C6, C7
Where does the lateral cord lay to the 2nd part of the axillary artery?
lateral
What cord is formed by the anterior division of the inferior trunk?
medial cord
Where does the medial cord lie to the 2nd part of the axillary artery?
Medial
What does the medial cord contain fibers from?
C8 & T1
What is formed by the union of the posterior division of all 3 trunks?
Posterior cord
Posterior cord contains fibers from where?
C5, C6, C7, C8, and T1
Where does the posterior cord lie in relation to the 2nd part of the axillary artery?
posterior
What nerves are formed from the roots of the brachial plexus?
Dorsal scapular nerve
Long thoracic nerve
What root does the dorsal scapular nerve branch off of?
C5 root
Dorsal Scapular nerve receives fibers from where?
C5 only
What muscles does the dorsal scapular nerve supply?
Levator scapula, rhomboid major, rhomboid minor
The levator scapula also receives fibers from where?
C3 & C4
Long thoracic nerve is formed by which roots
C5, C6, C7
Long thoracic nerve contains fibers from where
C5, C6, C7
Long thoracic nerve supplies what muscle
Serratus anterior
Which nerves branch off of the superior trunk of the brachial plexus
Suprascapular nerve, nerve of the subclavius
Where do the fibers come from, that supply the suprascapular nerve
C5 and C6
Suprascapular nerve supplies what muscles?
Supraspinatus, infraspinatus
Nerve to the subclavius receives fibers from where
C5 and C6
Nerve to the subclavius supplies what muscle
Subclavius
What nerves branch off of the lateral cord
lateral pectoral nerve, and musculocutaneous nerve
The lateral pectoral nerve contains fibers from where
C5, C6, C7
What muscle is supplied by the lateral pectoral nerve
pectoralis major
The pectoralis major receives innervation from where
Lateral pectoral nerve, and medial pectoral nerve
What are the names of the two terminal branches of the lateral cord
musculocutaneous nerve, median nerve
The musculocutaneous nerve contains fibers from where
C5, C6, C7
What muscles are supplied by the musculocutaneous nerve
coracobrachialis, biceps brachii (both heads), brachialis
The musculocutaneous nerve supplies the coracobrachialis and inserts where
nerve pierces belly of muscle
The musculocutaneous nerve continues between biceps brachii and brachialis into the forearm to become what
lateral cutaneous nerve of the forearm
What does the lateral cutaneous nerve of the forearm supply
Skin over lateral aspect of the forearm (not on the hand)
