How does testosterone contribute to development of prostate?

A

Testosterone is converted to dihydrotestosterone by enzyme Type II 5 alpha reductase in the prostate
Dihydrotestosterone is needed for normal growth/enlargment of the prostate

Explain the 2 main components in the pathophysiology of BPH

A

1) Static component: hormonal factors; testosterone converted to DHT leading to enlargement of prostate tissue -> urethral obstruction/signs and symptoms
2) Dynamic component: increase smooth muscle tissue and agonism of alpha-1 receptors -> narrowing of the urethra oulet -> urethral obstruction/signs and symptoms
