Definition of BPH
A
Minor prostatic hypertrophy is normal as men age, but if it enlarges too much it can lead to bladder outflow obstruction as it presses on the prostatic urethra.
The cause is unknown but may be related to testosterone

Presentation of BPH - 5
A
Difficulty urinating
Poor stream
Dribbling
Increased frequency and nocturia
Progressive bladder distention – may lead to overflow incontinence

DRE finding of BPH
A
Firm, smooth and rubbery prostate

Treatment of BPH - 4
A
- Catheterise first always
- Alpha blockers to relax SM at IUS e.g. Doxazosin
- Finasteride – prevents conversion of T to dihydrotestosterone which is the more potent form
-Resection of the prostate.
