Q

Explain subduction.

A

Subduction is the action of two tectonic plates colliding and the less dense plate, submerges underneath the denser one.

Q

Explain formation of earthquakes.

A

An earthquake is caused by a sudden slip on a fault. The tectonic plates are always slowly moving, but they get stuck at their edges due to friction. When the stress on the edge overcomes the friction, there is an earthquake that releases energy in waves that travel through the earth’s crust.

17
Q

Explain formation of tsunamis.

A

A tsunami is a series of extremely long waves caused by a large and sudden displacement of the ocean, usually the result of an earthquake below or near the ocean floor. This force creates waves that radiate outward in all directions away from the epicentre.

18
Q

Explain wave formation.

A

When the wind begins to blow, friction produces small ripples on the water surface, called capillary waves. The water molecules set in motion by wind begin to travel in small circles that we see at the surface as waves.

19
Q

Where was the epicentre?

A

Approximately 160 km west of northern Sumatra.

20
Q

How high were the waves when they first formed?

A

20cm

21
Q

How fast did the small waves move?

A

900km per hour.

22
Q

What was the magnitude of the earthquake?

A

9.1
