What is a toxic reaction / effect(s) of Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors?

What do do at a toxic reaction / effect(s) of Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors?

A

Pt should go to the local emergency department immediately
BP should be checked
meds to lower bp should be given; 5mg IV phentolamine or sublingual nifedipine to promote vasodilation.

Pt’ may be prescribed a 10 mg nifeddipine capsule to carry in case of an emergency

Family teaching about Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors

  • Avoid aged, cured, ripened, ODC (unless prescribed) with HCP

Give PT wallet card describing MAOI’s regiment

Instruct pt to avoid asain restaurant’s (sherry, brewer’s yeast)

  • tell pt to go to emergency dep. immediately if severe headaches arises
    BP should be monitored during 1st 6 weeks of treatment hyper and hypo bp
  • After MAOI’s are stopped, instruct pt that dietary and drug restrictions should be maintained for 14 day’s
