Bowlbys Theory Flashcards
What did bowlby believe?
That attachment was innate and a survival advantage.
What is monotropy?
Child has the need to attach to one main caregiver.
A special type of attachment
What’s law of continuity?
There is a link between early attachment and later relationships.
What is the law of accumulated separation?
Every separation between the baby has with the caregiver can add up and therefor the safest dose is 0.
What are social releasers?
Innate behaviours like crying and laughing that gain adult attention.
What is the critical period?
-From 6 months to 2.5 years.
-infants attachment system is active
What’s the internal working model (IWM)
-first attachment is a model for later relationships.
Criimps meaning
-critical period
-reciprocated
-innate
-internal working model
-monotropy
-proximity
-social releasers
Is monotropy valid? (-)
- a significant minority formed multiple attachments at the same time after the first one
-stage 4
Support for social releasers (+)
Observations took place where babies triggered interactions with adults using social releasers.
IWM support (+)
-99 mothers and babies relationship assessed.
-mothers and their own PAF (primary attachment figure) attachment measured and compared to mothers and their babies attachment.
-better attachment mother has with PAF, better attachment with baby.
Doesn’t just depend on IWM (-)
-there are other factors effect attachment between infants and caregivers.
-anxiety
-sociability
-genetic
Socially sensitive (-)
-law of continuity and accumulated separated suggest mothers who work may negatively affect their child’s emotional development.
