Bowlby's monotropic theory of attachment- AO3 Flashcards
What did Schaffer and Emerson state ?
They stated that children also tended to have one primary attachment figure, supportimg Bowlby’s idea of monotropy
What does Bowlby’s idea of attacgment being a form of inprinting suggest ?
It suggests that mere exposure to another individual is sufficient for an attachment to form
Although what did Schaffer and Emrrson find ?
They found that attachments occurred mainly with individuals displaying sensitive responsiveness, which goes against this idea
What did Rutter find ?
He found that mothers are not special in the way Bowlby beleived
Infants display a range of attachment behaviours towards attachment figures other than their mothers and there is no particular attachment used specifically and exclusively towards mothers which lesens suport for Bowlby’s theory
What did lamb study and what did he find ?
Lamb studied the attachment infants had with people like fathers , grandparents and siblings
He found that infabts had different attachments for different purposes rathervthan attachments being a hierarchy
Against Bowlby’s theory
What did schaffer and emerson find about multiole attachments ?
They found that multiple attachment are the norm which goes against Bowlby’s idea of monotropy, as does the fact that 39% of children had their main attachment to someone other than the main carer
How can Harlow’s work be used to support Bowlby’s theory?
Because it showed that because the monkeys did not grow up having a mother figure which caused them to have extreme difficulties in forming relationships when they were older.
Supporting Bowlby’s theory that if a relationship is not formed within 2.5 years then there will be significant damages in their adukt relationships
