Cathartic
A substance that accelerates defecation
Chyme
A semi-fluid pulp formed in the stomach made of partly digested food and the secretions of the gastrointestinal tract
C.DIff (Clostridiodies difficile)
Infection of the large intestine caused by the bacteria Clostridium difficile
Colonoscopy
An endoscopic examination of the inside of your large intestine, including the colon, rectum, and anus
Colostomy
An operation that creates an opening for the large intestine through the abdomen
Constipation
Infrequent, irregular, or difficult evacuation of the bowels
Defecation
The final act of digestion, organisms eliminate solid, semisolid, or liquid waste material from the digestive tract via the anus
Diarrhea
Feces are discharged from the bowels frequently and in a liquid form
Enema
Enema administration, a technique used to stimulate stool evacuation, most commonly used to relieve severe constipation
Fecal Occult Blood Test
A lab test used to check stool samples for hidden (occult) blood
Flatulence
Release of gas from the digestive system through the anus
Hemorrhoids
Swollen veins in the lower part of the rectum and anus that causes bleeding and discomfort, caused due to straining during bowel movements, obesity, or during pregnancy
Ileostomy
An opening in the belly that’s made during surgery
Impaction
the condition of being or process of becoming impacted, especially of feces in the intestine
Incontinence
lack of voluntary control over urination or defecation
Lavage
Washing out of a body cavity, such as the colon or stomach, with water or a medicated solution
Laxatives
Used to treat constipation
Ostomy
An artificial opening in an organ of the body, created during an operation such as a colostomy, ileostomy, or gastrostomy; a stoma
Paralytic Ileus
Pseudo-obstruction, a condition in which the bowel does not work correctly, but there is no structural problem causing it
Peristalsis
The progressive wave of contraction and relaxation of a tubular muscular system, in which the contents are forced through the system
Polyps
A small growth, usually benign and with a stalk, protruding from a mucous membrane
Stoma
An opening on the abdomen that can be connected to either your digestive or urinary system to allow waste (urine or feces) to be diverted out of your body
Suppository
A solid medical preparation in a roughly conical or cylindrical shape, designed to be inserted into the rectum or vagina to dissolve
Valsalva manuever
A breathing technique that involves exhaling forcefully against a closed airway, and is used to evaluate the condition of the heart and the autonomic nervous system
