Bowel Elimination Flashcards

1
Q

Valsalva maneuver

A

Thee act of bearing down to defecate; increases pressures in the abdominal and thoracic cavities resulting in temporary decreased cardiac output. Once the bearing down ceases, a larger than normal amount of blood returns to the heart. This may dangerously increase blood pressure in an already hypertensive patient and so is contraindicated in people with cardiovascular problems.
