Botany Week 1 Flashcards
What is plant taxonomy?
- Description
2.Identification
3.Nomenclature
4.Classification
Description:
The assignment morphological characteristics to a taxa
Identification:
The process of associating an organism with a taxon name
Nomenclature:
Naming of taxa based on standardized system
Classification:
The arrangement of taxa in hierarchal order
List reasons why Taxonomy is important?
- Scientists can measure and catalog biodiversity
- Communication with scientists around the world
- Common names are local geographically
Deficiencies with current taxonomic system of nomenclature
- It’s Eurocentric
- System is not friendly with population that doesn’t use Roman alphabet in their first language
- Local and indigenous name are for the most pant ignored
Native(indigenous):
Occurring naturally to area
Introduced:
Taxa introduced to an area because of human interference
Naturalized:
Not there before and became naturalized
Naturalized:
Not there before and became naturalized
Exotic:
From somewhere else
Escaped:
Non-native species that accidentally dispersed
Invasive:
Non-native plant that causes environmental harm or human harm
Native taxa:
Evolved locally for 100+ years; before humans
