Botany Vocab Flashcards
Alternate Leaf Arrangement
leaves interspersed along a stem, one per node
Example: The plant has an alternate leaf arrangement.
Broadleaf
having wide flat leaves, as opposed to needles
Additional Information: Broadleaf plants are common in temperate forests.
Compound Leaf
leaves consisting of more than one section, division, or order of branching, most commonly applied to leaves and inflorescences
Conifer
plant that has cones and usually needles or scales, evergreen leaves
Cotyledon
one of a seed’s first leaves
Dicot
plants that typically have two seed leaves, flower parts in multiples of 4 or 5, and net-veined leaves
Ground Cover
plants grown for their ability to conceal the soil from view and protect it from erosion, often tightly clumping plants that grow along the ground
Internode
area of a stem occurring between the two nearest nodes
Lateral Bud
bud on or at the side of a stem
Midrib
central vein of leaves, usually more prominent than the lateral veins
Monocot
plants that typically have one seed leaf, flower parts in multiples of 3, and parallel-veined leaves
Node
area of leaf attachment on the stem, may have a leaf, leaf scar, or branch
Opposite Leaf Arrangement
leaves occurring across from each other, paired two per node
Palmate Venation
having veins, lobes, leaflets, or dissections all arising from a single point, usually at the top of the petiole, like fingers from a palm
Parallel Venation
having veins that run more or less side by side the length of the leaf
