Botany Introduction Flashcards
What makes a plant a plant?
- More than one cell
- cellulose- rich cell walls
- photosynthetic
- adapted to life on earth
Compare photosynthetic organisms to heterotrophs
Photosynthetic Organisms are more complex
Biosphere
living world and its environment
What did the increase of O2 do to the Earth?
1) Outer layer of O2 converted to O3 (Ozone)
2) Efficient use of carbon molecules formed by photosynthesis
What is the purpose of roots?
Anchor the plant into the ground and collect water
What do stems do?
Support for leaves, and are the principle photosynthetic organs
Epidermis
outer layer of cells
Cuticle
waxy covering of leaves, limits H2O loss
Stomata
gaurd cells with small opening between them, allows for gas exchange
Vascular system
stem conducts variety of substances between photosynthetic and nonphotosynthetic parts
Xylem
H20 flows upward
Phloem
transports food throughout the plant
Meristems
embryonic tissue regions that continually add cells to the plant body
extension of all roots and shoots
Apical meristems
Primary growth, an extension of plant growth
Lateral meristems
Secondary growth, thickening of stems/roots
Vascular cambium
Cork cambium
