Q

Peppermint physiological effects

A
  1. Carminative
    a) Imprecise term relating to the release of trapped stomach or intestinal gas, probably through inhibiting sphincters and/or contracted taenia coli.
    b) Enhances gastric emptying in humans.
  2. Antispasmodic
    a) Inhibits smooth muscle contraction in intestine by antagonizing Ca++ influx.
    b) Reduces number of contractions and contraction amplitudes of the migrating motor complex.
    c) Inhibits contraction of the gallbladder.

16
Q

Saw Palmetto active constituents

A

Lipophilic berry extract containing 80-90% fatty acids and sterols.

**Don’t use teas! Water extracts are not high in fatty acids.

17
Q

Saw Palmetto physiologic actions

A
  1. Antiandrogenic: prevents enzymatic conversion of testosterone to more active DHT by inhibiting 5-alpha reductase.
  2. Antiproliferative: slows prostate cell proliferation by inhibiting growth factors, stimulating apoptosis.
  3. Anti-inflammatory: inhibits eicosanoid pathways, lowers TNF-a, IL-1b.
18
Q

Saw Palmetto side effects

A

Dizziness, GI complaints, fewer sexual function complaints than Rx.

**May prolong bleeding time in susceptible people; se caution with potent anti platelet or anticoagulant co-medication.
