Botanical Nomenclature Flashcards
What is ICBN Principle I?
Botanical nomenclature is independent of zoological and bacteriological nomenclature.
What is ICBN Principle II?
Application of names of taxonomic groups is determined by means of nomenclatural types.
What are the four nomenclatural types?
Holotype, isotype, lectotype, neotype
Define holotype.
The one specimen upon which the name is based, the original specimen.
Define isotype.
A duplicate of the holotype, collected at the same time by the same person from the same place.
Define lectotype.
Selected from original material to serve as the type (like if the holotype is missing or never existed).
Define neotype.
Specimen derived from a nonoriginal collection and selected to serve as a holotype.
What is ICBN Principle III?
The nomenclature of a taxonomic group is based upon priority of publication.
What is ICBN Principle IV?
Each taxonomic group with a particular circumscription, position, and rank can bear only one correct name, the earliest that is in accordance with the Rules, except in specified cases.
What is ICBN Principle V?
Scientific names of taxonomic groups are treated as Latin regardless of their derivation.
What is ICBN Principle VI?
The Rules of nomenclature are retroactive unless expressly limited.
Define specific epithet.
A latinized adjective or possessive noun placed after the genus, used to identify species.
Define authority.
Conventional abbreviations of the names of the persons that named the specimen, written in order of timing of their contributions.
