Bornaviridae Flashcards
general characterisitcs
enveloped, single (-)ssRNA, persistent infection of neurons characteristic
Disease
borna disease, neurologic usually fatal disease of horses
hosts
horses and sheep in central europe
in humans
behavioral and neuropsychiatric changes
transmission
unclear, possible oro-nasal
pathogenesis
virus pass intra-axonally to the olfactory bulbs of the brain from olfactory nerve endings
virus then disseminates throughout the CNS
replicates in neurons and glial cells
inclusion bodies
distinctive eosinophilic intranuclear inclusions in neurons
“joest-degen” bodies are pathognomonic
CS
early: dysfunctions in limbic system, horses- fever and behavioral changes
depression, altered eating behavior, head pressing, attacks of colic, nystagmus
later: dysfunction of motor systems causing paralysis
advanced cases
hyperesthesia, ataxia, paresis, paralysis
survivors
permanent sensory and or motor deficits
