- Merlot is the most widely planted variety in Bordeaux, very important for Premium wines on Pomerol and Saint Emilion.
- Medium yields.
- Mature early than Cabernet Sauvignon.
- It produces full-bodied, moderately tannic wines.
- It adds softness, richness and body, but need the 2 Cabernets for the aromatic fruit, colour and tannins.
- Merlot´s softness means it is better suited to produce inexpensive wine.
