Describe the terroir of the Sauternes region.
This region is on the left bank of the Garonne River, surrounded by the Landes Forest. Preignac, Fargues, Sauternes and Bommes all lie on an east-facing plateau which is shell limestone, marl or argilacious sand. Climate change and the ice age have created layered terraces and geologically completions from the different water levels of the river over time.
Name two reasons why Semillon is the best suited grape for the Sauternes region.
Semillon has a high resistance to mildew and odium. Buds don’t all burst at once so it has a chance of surviving a spring frost. The grapes also have thick skins.
Why is Sauvignon Blanc also a good fit for the climate of Sauternes?
It buds late but blooms and ripens early.
What is “Sauternes” pruning
Goblet shape of 3 canes which are spur pruned.
What is the maximum permitted harvest yield for Sauternes? What do most of the great growths harvest at?
25hl/haMost of the great growths are harvesting between 10-15hl/ha
