The lower Medoc has a high proportion of clay and limestone-based soils, and a smaller area of Garonne and Pyrenees gravel soils.. As such, the Cru Bourgeois in the area tend to produce St.-Emilion/Right Bank style wines based on Merlot. There are approximately 5,700 acres under vine, and the region produces an annual average of 300,000 hectoliters of wine.
