Define the authoritarian style of management and state three advantages and three disadvantages of this method (8)
The manager has total power over decision-making and communication is one way only, there is no consultation with employees and little delegation, the aim is to influence the workforce to carry out the demands exactly without question (2)
Advantages
1. Useful when there is a large number of low skilled, part-time or student workers
2. Useful when quick decisions are needed
3. Useful when employees lack the desire to make decisions
Disadvantages
1. Can be de-motivating as staff are not allowed to use initiative, very little delegation
2. Prevents staff skill development and promotion
3. Managers may have little faith in employees ability as they usually specialise in one area
Define the paternalistic style of management and state three advantages and three disadvantages of this method (8)
The paternalistic style of management is also authoritarian but attempts to reduce negative employee reactions to an authoritarian style and attempts to act as a parental figure to employees (2)
Advantages
1. More motivated workers leading to increased productivity
2. Employees are more likely to be loyal to management
3. Less labour turnover as employees have higher levels of motivation
Disadvantages
1. There can be an over reliance with the manager
2. All key final decisions are taken irrespective of employment input
3. It may be difficult to satisfy all members of staff as they are likely to have different aspirations
Define the laissez-faire style of management and state three advantages and three disadvantages of this method (8)
Laissez-faire is a type of management style that allows employees to carry out tasks without interference from management in order to achieve business objectives, staff make decisions without reference from the manager (2)
Advantages
1. Can be useful when employees are motivated and driven improving productivity
2. Allows the workforce to be creative, innovative and resourceful in a relaxed working environment
3. Management only intervened when required, mainly to assist the workforce in achieving their outcomes
Disadvantages
1. Doesn’t suit everyone as some need to be given direction
2. Unsuccessful if the workforce is less skilled, less educated and less experienced
3. It can be inappropriate in an environment where creativity and innovation in the workplace are non existent or task routines don’t permit freedom
Define the democratic style of management and state three advantages and three disadvantages of this method (8)
Democratic leadership encourages the managers to involve employees in the decision-making process through discussions and consultations, it encourages delegation and team efforts (2)
Advantages
1. Participation of workers allows the input of people with relevant skills and knowledge
2. A greater degree of employee participation in decision-making is likely to yield a positive effect on staff motivation and productivity
3. Could lead to improved morale and better quality decisions
Disadvantages
1. Decision-making may be slower because of the need to consult everyone
2. Concerns over where the power lies and loss of management control is in danger
3. It may not be possible to satisfy all staff in the decision-making process
