Hippocrates theory
Theory of the four humours: - yellow bile - black bile - blood - phlegm If you were ill one of these were out of balance.
Galen’s theory
The theory of opposites. That one of the 4 humours were out of balance so they started treating illnesses with cures like bleeding people as they had too much blood.
Catholic Churches envolvment
They cared for the sick and used herbs to heal people. They also used relics and prayed for the sick. As they thought it was a punishment from god.
What did medieval people Believe causes to illness were?
Bad smells, a bad everyday life, the supernatural, the 4 humours.
Treatments used to medieval doctors:
- garlic
- radish
- cold water
- sheep suit
- wormwood
Treatments for everyday fevers and headaches.
- bleed patient
- trepanning
- use sheep suite
- move to a place with ‘good air’ or good smells
- pray
Living conditions in medieval times:
- poo on street
- urine and dead animals on street
- no waste pipes
- all horrible waste and dead animals went into the the themes
- bathing in themes and cleaning in there
- lots of rats and fleas
Black Death
- foreign rats from the east
- spread easily due to living conditions
- rats lived in there houses.
- 1/2 of London died, 33% of England died.
Believed causes of the Black Death
- jews, astronomy, miasma, god punishment, 4 humours
How people prevented/ treated the Black Death
- popping the bubo
- drinking mercury and vinegar
- bleeding
- praying
- don’t eat use candles
