Independent southern states combine with North German Confederation after victorious war over France in 1870 to form the united German empire under Kaiser Wilhelm 1.
Bismarck launches the kulturkampf against the Catholic church in Germany.
March: First Reichstag elections - National Liberals the most popular party with 30.1% of the vote.

January: Second Reichstag elections - Nationals Liberals the most popular party with 29.7% of the vote.

Socialist worker’s party founded.
April: Berliner post publishes ‘is war in sight?’.
1877
January: Third Reichstag elections - National Liberals the most popular party with 27.7% of the vote.
1878
July: Fourth Reichstag elections - National Liberals and Centre Party tied with 23.1% of the vote each.
October: Anti-socialist legislation introduced which prohibits socialist meeting in Germany.

Bismarck brings the Kulturkampf to an end.
Reichstag votes to introduce protective tariffs on some imported goods.

Split in the National Liberals and the creation of the Liberal Union party.
1890
March: Otto Von Bismarck resigns as chancellor of Germany and is replaced by Caprivi.

German flag adopted.

The Bavarian Chlodwig Zu Hohenlohe-Schillingsfurst becomes the first non- Prussian chancellor of Germany.
