Turn-taking, complexity and completeness of sentence structure, vocabulary, use of contractions/expansions, volume/size, clarity, speaker goals, use of fillers, & allowable topics
Frozen Register
No turn taking, complex sentences, formal vocabulary, slower speed (large), topic limited
Formal Register
Limited turn-taking, complex/compound sentences, formal vocabulary, large slow speed, impersonal topics
Consultative Register
Restricted but active turn-taking, fully formed sentences, technical jargon, conversational pace, professional topics
Casual Register
Fluid interruptions, occasional fragments/run-ons, informal vocabulary, relaxed signing space but faster than conversational, personal topics
Intimate Register
Interruption is common, incomplete sentences, some personal lexicon, small space/sometimes signs not required, personal topics
Pragmatic Rules
Determine the meaning within context; determined not by words/signs, but by a variety of contextual factors
Grammar and meaning
Grammar is not needed, it is critical to understand HOW messages are constructed in order to extract meaning
Speaker Goals
To inspire or encourage, teach/instruct, recognize/honor, sell/convince, move to action
