Fantasy
A fictional story set in a fictional universe with roots in oral traditions which have become literature and drama.
Fable
A short story, typically with animals as characters and will convey a moral or lesson.
Folktale
A story that has been passed down from generation to generation, often by oral story-telling. (Can include myths, tall tales, legends, fables, and fairy tales.)
Poetry
The expression of feeling and using ideas by the use of style and rhythm.
Mystery
A genre of fiction that involves a crime to be solved.
Legend
A type of folklore that tells about a specific person or place.
Myth
A story describing the adventures of beings with more than human powers.
Biography
An account of someone’s life, written by someone else.
Autobiography
An account of a person’t life. written BY THAT PERSON.
Realistic Fiction
Stories that could have actually occurred to people or animals in a believable setting.
Fairy Tale
A magical tale about imaginary beings and lands.
Tall Tale
A story with unbelievable elements, related as if it were true and factual.
Science Fiction
Stories that deal with imaginative or futuristic concepts.
Historical Fiction
The plot takes place in a setting located in the past.
Traditional Literature
Stories that have been handed down doom one generation to the next.
