BOOK 1 Flashcards
latitude
The lines running east-west across the map and are measured in degrees north or south of the Equator (0 degrees latitude).
longitude
The lines running north-south down the map and are measured in degrees east and west of Greenwich or Prime Meridian (0 degrees longitude).
landscape
an area that is created by a combination of geological, biological and cultural layers that have evolved over time.
landforms
the individual surface features of the earth identified by their shape eg. cliffs, sand dunes and canyons.
continental drift
vast tectonic pieces press, push and drag portions of the earth’s
crust in large-scale movements, known as Continental Drift.
sustainability
Sustainability refers to the management and maintenance of environments to support
our lives and future generations
Temperature range
You need to subtract the minimum temperature from the maximum temperature. This can be a monthly range or an annual range.
Average annual temperature
You need to add up all the temperatures for the year and then divide this by 12 months.
Total annual rainfall
You need to add up all the rainfall for the year.
Average annual rainfall
You need to add up all the rainfall for the year and then divide this by 12 months.
Hemispheres
If the temperature increases mid-year then it means that warmest time of the year is in the middle of the year and therefore the place is in the northern hemisphere. Conversely, if the temperature decreases mid-year then it means that coldest time of the year is in the middle of the year and therefore the place is in the southern hemisphere. If the line is almost horizontal then the place is near the equator.
Dry conditions
If a place experiences less than 25 millimetres of rainfall in any month then we term that month “dry”. The greater the number of dry months, the more likely the place is a desert area.
outline
sketch in general terms or indicate the main features
describe
Relate cause and effect; make the relationships between things evident; provide why and/or how
discuss
Identify issues and provide points for and/or against
