Bony pelvis Flashcards
Bony pelvis is made up of
2 hip bones: anterior and laterally.
Sacrum and coccyx: posteriorly.
The 2 hip bones articulate in the midline anteriorly by
pubic symphysis
The hip bone articulates posteriorly with the sacrum by
sacroiliac joint
Pubic symphysis is what type of joint
Sacroiliac joint is what type of joint
symphyses-secondary cartilaginous
synovial joint- plane
Divisions of the pelvis
Greater or false pelvis
Lesser or true pelvis
Greater pelvis
Bounded by iliac fossa on each side.
Cavity forms lower part of abdominal cavity.
Lesser pelvis
Lies below level of pelvic brim.
It is the space enclosed between the pelvic inlet and outlet.
The junction between the greater and lesser pelvis is known as
Pelvic inlet.
The outer bony edges of the pelvic inlet
Pelvic brim
Borders of pelvic inlet
Posterior – sacral promontory and sacral wings or ala.
Lateral – arcuate line on the inner surface of the ilium, and the pectineal line on the superior pubic ramus.
Anterior – pubic symphysis.
What determines size of birth canal
Pelvic inlet.
Where is the pelvic outlet located
At the end of the lesser pelvis and at the beginning of the pelvic wall
Boundaries of pelvic outlet
Posterior: The tip of the coccyx
Lateral: The ischial tuberosities and the sacrotuberous ligament
Anterior: The pubic arch
The angle beneath the pubic arch is known as
Sub-pubic angle
Greater size in women.
Boundaries of lesser pelvis
Anterior and below- pubic symphysis, body of pubis and pubic rami.
Posterior and above-pelvic surface of sacrum and coccyx.
On each side-pelvic surface of ilium and ischium.
Male pelvis
Heavier and stronger.
Bony markings are more prominent.
Joint surfaces are larger.
Greater or false pelvis is deep.
Anterior superior iliac spine is inverted.
Pelvic inlet is heart shaped.
Pelvic cavity is deep and funnel shaped.
Pelvic outlet is narrower.
Coccyx projects forward.
Female pelvis
Lighter and thinner.
Bony markings are less prominent.
Joint surfaces are smaller.
Greater or false pelvis is shallow.
Anterior superior iliac spine is everted.
Pelvic inlet is oval or rounded.
Pelvic cavity is shallow and tubular
Pelvic outlet is wider.
Coccyx projects downwards.
Types of pelvis
Gynaecoid.
Android.
Platypelloid.
Anthropoid.
Gynaecoid 50%
Commonest female type.
Inlet is slightly oval along the transverse axis.
Wide and shallow pelvic cavity.
Ischial spines are blunted and do not protrude into the cavity.
Sacrum is broad and has a deep concavity.
Ideal for delivery.
Android 20%
Resemble male pelvis.
Inlet is heart-shaped (large sacral promontory).
Pelvic cavity is funnel shaped.
Ischial spines are conical and protrude into the cavity.
Sacrum is slightly curved.
Anthropoid 25%
It has features of both the android and gynaecoid pelvis.
Inlet is oval in the anteroposterior axis.
Deep pelvic cavity.
Ischial spines are blunt.
Sacrum is long, narrow and less curved than in the gynaecoid pelvis.
Can facilitate delivery but high risk of obstructed labor
Platypelloid 5%
Flat type of pelvis.
Shallow pelvic cavity.
Sacrum is slightly curved.
