Bony Landmarks Flashcards
Facet
Forms joints.
Small flat or nearly flat surface
Example: above the condyle of the femur
Head
Forms joint.
Prominent, rounded projection of the proximal end of bone.
Example: part of the femur that goes into hip.
Angle
Attaches muscles, tendons or ligaments.
Bend or protruding angular projection
Example: where rib and sternum connect
Border or margin
Attaches muscles, tendons or ligaments.
Edge or boundary line of a bone
Example: axiallary border on the scapula
Crest
Attaches muscles, tendons or ligaments.
Prominent, narrow ridge like projection
Example: top circular part of pelvis
Epicondyle
Attaches muscles, tendons or ligaments.
Projection located above a condyle
Example: medial and lateral epicondyle of the femur
Line
Attaches muscles, tendons or ligaments.
Ridge of bone less prominent than a crest
Example: inside of the pelvis
Process
Attaches muscles, tendons or ligaments.
Any prominent projection
Example: coracoid process on the scapula
Ramus
Attaches muscles, tendons or ligaments.
Part of an irregular shaped bone that is thinker than a process and forms an angle with the main body.
Example: bottom of pelvis
Spine
Attaches muscles, tendons or ligaments.
Sharp slender projection
Suture
Attaches muscles, tendons or ligaments.
Line of union between bones
Example: sutures of the skull
Trochanter
Attaches muscles, tendons or ligaments.
Very large projection
Example: greater and lesser trochanter of the femur
Tuberosity
Attaches muscles, tendons or ligaments.
Large rounded or roughed projection
Example: tibial tuberosity
Facet
Depression.
Flattened or shallow articulating surface
Example: superior articulate facet of sacrum
Foramen
Depression.
Rounded hole or opening in bone
Example: bottom of pelvis
