Bony and Membranous Labyrinths Flashcards
What are the two membranes that separate the three scalas
Reisner’s membrane vestibuli and media
Basilar membrane media and tympani
The ear is a very mobile transducer
Scala vestibuli perilymph
Scala media endolymph potassium +
Scala tympani perilymph sodium -
The cochlear core
As the labyrinth twists around the inside is bony, this forms shelf that is called the osseous spiral lamina. Combined this would look like a screw. Forming the core inside the bone shelf is a large trunk of the auditory nerve the modiolus.
The spiral limbus
On the top of the osseous spiral lamina is the spiral limbus. Spiral limbus is a bone covering that the Reisner’s membrane connects to. The basilar membrane connects to the bottom of the osseous spiral lamina.
Rosenthal’s Canal
Bony portion in the middle. Contains the cell bodies/spiral ganglia of the auditory nerve.
Habenula Perforata
Perforations in the osseous spiral lamina. What the auditory nerve projects through to connect to the hair cells.
