Bones-skull: Cranium & Face Flashcards
Parietal- 2
Location: makes up ‘sides’ and top of skull
Features: sagittal suture, coronal suture
Frontal
Location: anterior(front) of skull
Features: supraorbital for amen, frontal sinuses
Occipital
Location: back of skull
Function: joins parietal bones and lambdoidal suture
Features: lambdoidal suture, has very large foramen magnum at base of skull, rounded processes( occipital consoles) on either side
Temporal- 2
Location: sides of head
Features: squamal suture, external auditory/acoustic meatus(ear), man fibulae fassae(articulates with mandible), rounded mastoid process (attaches to muscle), pointed styloid process(attached to tongue and pharynx)
Sphenoid
Location: anterior and temporal
-“winged”
-makes floor of cranium
Features: Sellica Turcica( Turks Saddle)-pituitary gland is held here, sphenoid all sinuses
Ethmoid
Location: either side of nasal sinus, joined by cribriform plate
Features: Olfactory Foramina, Crista Galli(cock’s comb)- upward projection and point of attachment for brain membrane, perpendicular plate-projects downward forming nasal septum, superior and middle nasal concha
Maxilla- 2
Location: upper jaw, floor of eye orbits, hard palate, sides of nasal cavities, houses upper teeth
Function: dictates face shape-bones articulate here
Features: large maxillary sinuses, forms aveolar process and arch, holds teeth in sockets with dense conn. tissue
Palatine- 2
2 L-Shaped bones
Form part of nasal cavity and hard palate
Zygomatic- 2
Form prominence of cheekbones
Anterior portion of cheek
Lacrimal- 2
Thin, form part of medial walls of orbits
Have groove for ducts
Nasal- 2
Form bridge of nose
Vomer
Makes nasal septum(perpendicular plate)
Inferior nasal conchae- 2
Thin and delicate
Support mucus membrane in nasal cavity
Mandible
Contains lower teeth
Divided into posterior mandibular condyle, articulates with mandible fassae of temporal bone
Coronoid Process-chewing muscles attach to
