Bones of the Skull Flashcards
Bones of the Skull
Frontal Bone
Forms the forehead. Superior part of the orbit; floor of anterior cranial fossa. Fused to the frontal bone by the coronal suture.
Parietal Bone (2)
Two bones, fused together at the sagittal suture, each forming a side of the cranium. Posterolateral to frontal bone.
Temporal Bone (2)
Two bones, each inferior to parietal bone on lateral skull.
Occipital Bone
Forms floor and back walls of cranium. Most posterior bone of cranium.
Zygomatic Process (2)
Bridge-like projection in squamous region in a temporal bone joining the zygomatic/cheek bone anteriorly.
Mandibular Fossa (2)
Forms socket for mandibular condyle. Rounded depression on the inferior surface of the zygomatic process.
Mastoid Process (2)
Rough projection in mastoid region of temporal bone, inferior and posterior to the external acoustic meatus.
Jugular Foramen (2)
In petrous part of temporal bone; an opening medial to the styloid process through which the internal jugular vein and cranial nerves IX, X, and XI pass.
Carotid Canal (2)
In petrous part of temporal bone; opening medial to the stlyoid process through which the internal carotid artery passes into the cranial cavity. Anterior to the jugular foramen.
