Bones of the Skeleton Flashcards
What encloses and protects the brain; provides attachment for muscles that allow chewing and head movements
Cranium💀
Forehead bone; anterior portion of the skull above the eyes
Frontal bone
Bones that form the sides and roof of the cranium
Parietal bones
Bone that forms the back of the skull and the base of the cranium
Occipital bone
Bones that forms parts of the sides and base of the cranium; on each side of the skull and joins with the parietal bone
Temporal bones
Bone that helps form the base of the cranium, the sides of the skull, and the floors and sides of the orbits; wedged bone
Sphenoid bone
Bone that consists of 2 masses on each side of the nasal cavity joined by cribriform plates; located in front of the sphenoid bone
Ethmoid bone
Consists of 13 immovable bones and 1 movable lower jawbone; form the basic shape of the face; provide attachments for muscles that move the jaw; control facial expressions
Facial skeleton
Upper jaw bone; forms the anterior roof of mouth (hard palate), floors of the orbits, and sides/floor of nasal cavity; contain sockets of the upper teeth
Maxilla
L-shaped bone located behind the maxillae; form the posterior section of the hard palate and floor of the nasal cavity
Palatine bones
Cheekbone; located below and to the sides of the eyes; help form the lateral walls and floors of the orbits; temporal process
Zygomatic bones
Bone that is a thin, scalelike structure; located in the medial wall of each orbit; between the ethmoid and maxilla bones
Lacrimal
Long, thin, and nearly rectangular bones; lie side by side and fused at the midline; form the bridge of the nose
Nasal bones
Thin, flat bone located along the midline within the nasal cavity; joins with the ethmoid bone to form the nasal septum
Vomer
Bones that are fragile, scroll- shaped and attached to the lateral walls of the nasal cavity; support mucous membranes w/in the nasal cavity
Inferior nasal concha
Lower jaw bone; horseshoe shaped body with a flat portion projecting upward at each end; allow chewing; contain hollow sockets that hold lower teeth
Mandible
Areas of incomplete intramembranous ossification; soft spots
Fontanels
What bone extends from the skull to the pelvis and forms the vertical axis of the skeleton?
Vertebral column
Many bony parts separated by masses of fibrocartilage called intervertebral discs and are connected to one another by ligaments.
Vertebrae
Comprise the bony axis of the neck; two special vertebrae: atlas supports the head and axis bears toothlike dens and allows for head pivoting; 7
Cervical vertebrae
Larger than the cervical vertebrae; has a long, pointed spinous process, which slopes downward, and facets on the sides of its body; articulate with the rib; 12
Thoracic vertebrae
Located in the small of the back; larger and stronger bodies to support more weight than the above vertebrae; 5
Lumbar vertebrae
Triangular structure, composed of five fused vertebrae that forms the base of the vertebral column
Sacrum
Tailbone; lowest part of the vertebral column and is usually composed of four fused vertebrae
Coccyx
