Bones, Movements, Planes, Axis Flashcards
Name the functions of the skeleton?
- Provide Stability
- Provide Protection
- Provide Shape
- Provide Movement
- Blood Cell Production
Name some functions of the muscular system
- Movement ( muscles pull on the bones of the skeletal system via tendons to cause movement )
- Maintaining Posture ( to keep us upright )
- Constricting Blood Vessels ( constrict blood vessels to support the movement of blood )
- Heat Production ( produce heat when they contact to help maintain body temperature )
- Respiration ( intercostals muscles of the ribs supper mechanics of breathing )
What type of joint is at your neck?
Pivot Joint ( enables rotation in one plane )
What type of joint is at your elbow and knee joint?
Hinge Joint ( movement in one plane, e.g. flexion and extension )
What type of joint is between your fingers ?
Saddle Joint ( allows most movements except rotation )
What type of joint is at your ankle?
Gliding Joint ( limited movements, but in all planes )
What type of joint is at your wrist?
Condyloid Joint
What type of joint is at your hip?
Ball and Socket Joint ( allows all movements )
What is the Transverse Plane
Any form of rotation occurs around the longitudinal axis (e.g. a spin in ice skating)
What is the Frontal Plane
Divides the body into front and back halves, movements are largely towards or away from the midline of the body (e.g. cartwheel and star jumps)
What is the Sagittal Plane?
Divides the body into left and right halves down the midline of the body, largely associated with flexion and extension at joints (e.g. when a striking a football or somersault in gymnastics)
