A large prominence.
Cotyloid
A cavity or deep articular depression
Trochlee
Greek for spool. A keyed tubular pulley-shaped articular design (such as trochlea of femur)
Trochanter
Greek for runner, runner’s muscle-attachment. Term used on in regards to the femur bone describing various proximal processes. (Eg greater trochanter, third trochanter, and lesser trochanter)
Fissure
A narrow opening between two bones
Fovee
Latin for pit. A shallow non-articulating depression such as is found in the head of a femur
Line
A ridge on a bone not as prominent as a crest.
Spine
Latin for thom. A slender, sharp projection.
Facet
French for small face. Small articular surfaces covered with hyaline cartilage.
Condyle
Greek for knuckle; large articulating prominences
Crest
A significant border or ridge
Process
Latin for proceed. Any prominent projection of bone as in a crest, trochanter, tuberosity, or spine.
Head
A round articulating surface shaped like a ball
Epicondyle
An eminence (protuberance) at the articular end of a long bone, above or on the Condyle
Tubercle
Latin for knob. A small rounded or rough prominence.
Acetabulum
The socket or cavity (cotyloid) of the hipbone into which the head of the femur fits
Malleolus
Latin for little hammer. The projection of a bone as in the distal end of the tibia
Ala
Latin for wing. Outward projections as in the transverse process of the atlas (first neck bone) and large surface of the ilium region of the hipbone
Fossa
Latin for cavity. A depression or small hollow.
Foramen
Latin for aperture. An opening or hole in a bone.
