Bones And Landmarks Flashcards
Spine of scapula
Superficial ridge located just off top of shoulder, running diagonally from acromion to medial border of scapula.
Medial Border of Scapula
Long edge of scapula that runs parallel to vertebral column. (Inside edge of scapula)
Inferior Angle of Scapula
Superficial angle located at lower end of medial border of scapula
Superior Angle of Scapula
Superior end of medial border of scapula, deep to Trapezius muscles.
Lateral Border of Scapula
Extends superiorly and laterally from inferior angle of scapula toward axilla (armpit) (outside edge of scapula)
Infraglenoid Tubercle
Most superior edge of Lateral border of scapula - not distinguishable by looking, but as attachment site for triceps brachii long head. Deep to Teres minor and deltoid muscles.
Infraspinous Fossa of Scapula
Triangular depression inferior to spine of scapula; area of infraspinatus muscle
Supraspinous Fossa of Scapula
Depression located superior to the spine of scapula. Area of supraspinatus muscle.
Subscapular Fossa
Depression located on scapula underside surface, next to rib cage. Area of subscapularis muscle.
Acromion of Scapula
Lateral wraparound edge of spine of scapula located at top of shoulder. Has flat surface and articulates with clavicle lateral end.
-acromial angle is small corner that can be felt alon acromion’s lateral/posterior edge.
Clavicle
Superficial and horizontal bone located across upper chest and has gentle S shape.
Both ends of clavicle superficial.
-Lateral end relatively flat and rises slightly higher than acromion
-Medial end is round and articulates with sternum
Acromioclavicular Joint
Small articulation between acromion of scapula and acromial end of clavicle
Sternoclavicular Joint
Articulation between sternal end of clavicle and sternum.
-contains small, impalpable fibrous disc.
Coracoid Process
Beak-like projection found inferior to shaft of clavicle, often found in deltopectoral groove.
Deltoid Tuberosity
Located on lateral side of humerus shaft near the middle. Small, low bump that is attachment site for deltoid fibers.
Greater Tubercle of Humerus
Located inferior and lateral to acromion. Shaped more like low mound than pointy hill.
Intertubercular Groove
Situated between greater and lesser tubercles, roughly a pencil’s width in diameter.
Lesser Tubercle of Humerus
Smaller than greater tubercle, and medial to greater tubercle on head of humerus.
Olecranon Process
Proximal end of ulna, articulates with distal humerus. Forms point of elbow
Olecranon Fossa
Large cavity on posterior, distal end of humerus designed to accommodate olecranon process when elbow extended.
Medial Epicondyle of Humerus
Directly medial from olecranon process. Superficial and has protruding, spherical shape.
Lateral Epicondyle of Humerus
Smaller than medial epicondyle, and is lateral to olecranon process.
Lateral Supracondylar Ridge of Humerus
Extends proximally from epicondyle, located superficially.
Medial Supracondylar Ridge of Humerus
Extends proximally from epicondyle. Medial Ridge sinks into arm, situated close to ulnar nerve.
Shaft of Ulna
Long, straight shaft extending from olecranon process to head of ulna.
Superficial, palpable edge that runs along forearm’s posterior medial aspect (in anatomical position)
Head of Ulna
Superficial knob visible along posterior, medial side of wrist (in anatomical position) that can disrupt placement of watchband.
Shaft of Radius
Located on lateral side (thumb side) of forearm, most of shaft of radius buried under muscle tissue.
Head of Radius
Distal to humerus’s lateral epicondyle, it forms radius’s proximal end and has circular, bell shape. Pivoting point for supination/pronation of forearm.
Styloid Process of Radius
On inside of wrist, near thumb (lateral side of radius) - wider, more substantial mound of bone
Lister’s Tubercle
(Aka. Dorsal Tubercle) top of wrist - small knob; located on dorsal surface of radial styloid process; feels like small oblong point on radius about an inch away from head of radius
