Bones and joints of the thoracic wall Flashcards
What does the thoracic wall comprise of?
Sternum anteriorly, Vertebrae T1-12 posteriorly, and ribs 1-12 laterally
What bones articulate with the manubrium at its super-lateral angle?
Sternum and clavicle
What is the joint at the manubrium at its super-lateral angle known as?
Sternoclavicular joint
What type of joint is the sternoclavicular joint?
saddle type of Synovial joint
What is the name given to the median notch formed by the superior border of the manubrium?
Jugular notch
What vertebra does the xiphoid process occur?
T10
What vertebrae does the sternomanubrial joint form?
T5 but at the second rib.
Which part of the sternum articulates with facets for 2nd costal cartilage?
manubriosternal joint
What are the typical ribs?
3-9
What do typical ribs have?
- look at notes
What are false ribs
8-10
-vertebrochonral ribs
What are floating ribs
11-12
-vertebral
What are floating ribs
11-12
-vertebral
What does the tubercle articulate with?
The transverse process of the thoracic vertebrae of the same number (synovial joint-smooth) and non articular part for fibrous attachment to the process via the costotransverse ligament.
What does the head of the rib articulate with?
The vertebrae of same number and the rib above. IE. rib 5 connects to 5th TV and 4TV
What lies in the costal groove (bottom of the rib)
- inTERCOSTAL vein, intercostal artery, intercostal nerve.
Describe the structure 1st rib.
Atypical true rib.
- short and wide and flat.
- the ribs increase in size until rib 7 then decrease after that.
- articulates with only a single vertebrae T1.
Describe the ph-ysical features of the first rib.
- scalene tubercle for attachment of the anterior scalene muscle
- groove for subclavian artery (posterior to tubercle)
- groove for subclavian vein (anterior to tubercle)
define dermatome
area of skin supplied by one pair of spinal nerves
what is the name of the joint between the rib and vertebrae?
Costotransverse joint
which structure and which membrane surrounding the structure pass through the vertebral foramen?
spinal cord and meninges (dura, pia and arachnoid mater)
Which nerve part and surrounding membranes pass through the intervertebral foramen/
Mixed spinal nerves and epineurium
Describe the thoracic spinous process
Long and slender, sloping downwards. is not bifid.
Which two parts of the vertebrae form the neural/vertebral arch i.e. the part of the vertebrae that enclose the spinal cord?
Paired pedicles and paired laminae
