Bones Flashcards
What is the metaphysis?
The metaphysis is the wide portion of a long bone between the epiphysis and the narrow diaphysis.
-Is part of the growth plate in growing bone.
What is the Condyle?
(= articular facet)
-Smooth end of a bone, covered with cartilage that articulates in a joint with the condyle of and adjoining bone.
What is the Epicondyle & Supracondylar region/ridge/line?
-Protruding area above or below the condyle for attachment of ligaments and muscles that act on the joint.
What is the Fossa?
-A shallow depression
What is a process?
Any projection or bump
What is a Foramen?
A rounded aperture for vessels and nerves.
What is a Sulcus?
A narrow groove
What is a Tuberosity?
A rough projection
What is a Tubercle?
A small rounded projection
What is a spine?
A pointed process
How to study a long bone?
- A long bone presents for examination a shaft, and two extremities - proximal and distal.
- Identify the structures at each extremity.
- Identify the bone(s) with which each extrmity articulates and name the joint formed.
- Identify the nerves lying in close relation to the shaft.
- Identify the muscles attaching to each extremity and how these move the bone.
