Bones Flashcards
How many thoracic vertebrae are there?
12
Describe the levels and numbers of vertebrae in an adult human.
C7, T12, L5, fused(S5, CXY4) = 33 in total
Which ribs are true, false, and floating ribs respectively?
1-7, 8-10, 11-12
Name the three components of the sternum
Manubrium body xiphoid
Describe the movement of the thoracic cage during vigorous inspiration.
Upwards and outwards - “bucket handle swinging out”
Describe the surface marking of the suprasternal/jugular notch
Right at the top of the manubrium.
How do you find the sternal angle?
Start at the jugular notch and run finger down until you hit the blunt ridge
Which costal cartilage (CC) lies lateral to the manubriosternal joint/sternal angle?
2nd CC
How do you find the 2nd intercostal space (ICS)
Run finger down into the groove under the 2nd CC.
Which vertebral level is the xiphoid located?
T9
Which thoracic level is the lowest point of the costal margin?
L2
Describe how to find surface markings for C1, T1, T2, T3, T7
C1 = First prominent spine, T1 is next after. T2 is superior angle of scapula. T3 = medial portion of scapula spine. T7 = inferior angle of the scapula
