Bones Flashcards
Draw cross section of a long bone; showing and labelling:
- periosteum
- bone marrow
- medullary cavity
- blood vessels
- cancellous bone (spongy bone)
- compact bone
What is the general function of bone?
- Assisting in leverage and movement
- structural support (providing a framework)
- storage of minerals (calcium, etc.)
- protection (skull in cases the brain, ribs incase the heart, lungs, etc.)
- Blood production (hematopoiesis)
Long bones
Support the weight of the body and facilitate movement.
E.g. Tibia, fibula, metatarsals & phelanges)
Short bones:
Cube shaped (roughly as wide as long)
- provide support and stability with little to no movement.
E.g. Carpal, tarsal bones.
Flat bones
- extensive protection
- the supply of broad surfaces for muscular attachment.
For example: sternum, cranial, the ilium(pelvis).
Irregular bones:
serve various purposes in the body, such as:
- protection of nervous tissue. E.g. (Vertebrae protects the nervous tissue)
- provides multiple anchor points for skeletal muscle attachment.
- mai ring pharynx and trachea support, and tongue attachment.
Joints are classified as:
- fibrous joints
- cartilaginous joints
- synovial joints
