Q

Flat bone

A

Thin, flattened, and usually curved bone.
• Two thing layers of compact bone that sandwich a layover of spongy bone.
• Ribs, sternum

Q

Epiphysis

A
  • Ends of the long bone

* Consists of a thin layer of compact bone enclosing an area filled with spongy bone.

13
Q

Epiphyseal plate

A

Thin plate if hyaline cartilage seen on young, growing bones that becomes bone as it matures.
• Grows lengthwise for long bone
• Leaves epipthyseal lines behind

15
Q

Canaliculus

A

Tiny canals that radiate outward from the central canal to all lacunae.

16
Q

Central canal (Harversian canal)

A

Runs length wise through the boney matrix and carries blood vessels & nerves to all areas if the bone.

17
Q

Perforating (Volkmann’s) canal

A

Communication pathway from outside the bone to the interior (and central canal) that runs into compact bone at a right angle to the shaft.

18
Q

Osteocytes

A

Mature blood cells found within the matrix in tiny cavities (lacunae).

19
Q

Lacuna

A

Tiny cavities arranges in concentric circles (lamellas).

20
Q

Matrix

A

Calcium salts

21
Q

Compound fracture

A

He’s

22
Q

Simple fracture

A

Hsb

23
Q

Compressed fracture

A

Bone is crushed.

• Common is porous bones.

24
Q

Comminuted fracture

A

Bone breaks into many fragments.

25
Q

Depressed fracture

A

Broken bone portion is pressed onward.

• Skull fracture

26
Q

Impacted fracture

A

Broken bone ends are forces into each other.

27
Q

Spiral fracture

A

Ragged break occurs when excessive twisting forces are applied to a bone.

28
Q

Greenstick fracture

A

Bone breaks incompletely, much in the way a green twig breaks.
