bones Flashcards
Hyaline
Most abundant type; covers bone ends at joints; found in Airways, rib cage, nose
Elastic
Very flexible (external ear and epiglottis)
Fibrocartilages
Resist very high compression forces
Axial
Skull, rib cage, vertebrae
Appendicular
Limbs, shoulders, pelvic
Epiphyses
Ends of long bone
Diaphysis
Shaft (between epiphyses)
Medullary/yellow marrow cavity
Contains yellow marrow
Periosteum
Double membrane surrounding bone; contains osteoblasts and osteoclasts
Endosteum
Lines inner cavities
Epiphyseal (growth) plate-
Hyaline cartilage from which bone growth occurs in childhood and Adolescence
Spongy (trabecular) bone
Contains red marrow; found in interior of epiphysis
Articular cartilage
smooth white tissue; covers ends of bones where joints form
Trabeculae
plates in spongy bone, change over lifetime to help resist stress to bone
Compact (cortical) bone
surrounds medullary cavity and spongy bone of epiphyses
Osteon
weight bearing pillars of bones, run lengthwise through compact bone, look like growth rings on tree cross section
Osteogenic cells
Stem cells that give rise to osteoblasts
Osteocytes
mature osteoblasts; maintain bone matrix; Found between rings of Matrix, lucunae
Osteoblasts
Stone building cells; secrete osteoid; found beneath periosteum secrete bone matrix
