Bones Flashcards
1
Q
Describe the parts within a Haversian System.
A
- Haversian Canal - at the center, contains at least one blood capillary.
- Lamellae - concentric layers of bony matrix around Haversian canal.
- Lacunae - small spaces in the matrix between the lamellae. An osteocyte occupies each one.
- Canaliculi - tiny canals that run between the lacunae.
2
Q
Explain what spongy bone consists on.
A
It consists of trabeculae - an irregular arrangement of thin, bony plates.
Lamellae NOT arranged in concentric layers.
3
Q
State functions of the skeleton.
A
- Provides shape and support.
- Provides points of attachment for muscles to allow movement.
- Protects vital organs.
- Stores mineral salts and fats.
- Participates in blood cell production.
4
Q
State the parts of the Axial skeleton.
A
- Skull: cranial and facial bones.
- Vertebral column: cervical, thoracic, lumbar, sacrum, coccyx.
- Thorax: sternum and ribs.
5
Q
State parts of the Appendicular skeleton.
A
- Shoulder girdle: clavicle and scapula.
- Pelvic girdle: coxal bones.
- Upper limb: humerus, ulna, radius, carpals, metacarpals, phalanges.
- Lower limb: femur, fibula, tibia, patella, tarsals, metatarsals, phalanges.
6
Q
Explain difference between true, false and floating ribs.
A
- True ribs: directly attached to sternum
- False ribs: have cartilage that does not attach directly to the sternum.
- Floating ribs: not attached to sternum.
