Bone Tumors Flashcards
Acting on resting chondrocytes to induce and maintain proliferation
GH
Acting on proliferating chondrocytes to induce hypertrophy
T3
Made by prehypertrophic chondrocytes
- coordinates chondrocyte proliferation and differentiation, and osteoblast proliferation
Indian hedgehog (IHH)
- Made by perichondrial stromal cells and early proliferating chondrocytes
- Activates the PTH receptor and maintaining chondrocyte proliferation
PTHrP
- Secreted factors
- Promotes both proliferation and maturation of chondrocytes
Wnt
- A transcription factor expressed by proliferating condrocytes
- Drives precursor differentiation into chondrocytes
SOX9
- A transcription factor expressed in early hypertrophic chondrocytes and immature mesenchymal cells
- controls terminal chondrocyte and osteoblast differentiation
RUNX2
Acts on hypertrophic chondrocytes to inhibit proliferation and promote differentiation
Fibroblast growth Factors (FGF3)
Affects chondrocyte proliferation and hypertrophy
Bone Morphogenic Proteins (BMP)
This is where resorption exceeds formation
there is steady decline in skeletal mass
4th decade of life
It modulates balance between bone formation and resorption
Osteoprotegerin OPG and RANKL
<2cm in diameter
- appendicular skeleton
- responsive to aspirin and NSAIDs
Osteoid Osteoma
Treatment: radiofrequency ablation
- > 2cm in diameter
- posterior spine
- unresponsive to aspirin
Osteoblastoma
treatment: curettage or en bloc excision
- most common primary malignant tumor of the bone
Osteosarcoma
- metaphyseal region of long bones
triangular shadow between cortex and raised periosteal ends
