bone tissue Flashcards
1
Q
1) Osteon (aka Haversian system)
2) Central canal (aka Haversian’s canal)
A
- the microscopic structural unit of compact bone composed of rings of calcified matrix called concentric lamellae (singular = lamella) surrounding a central opening called central canal.
- longitudinal channel in the center of each osteon; contains nerves, blood and lymphatic vessels.
2
Q
3) Concentric Lamellae
4) Circumferential Lamellae
5) Interstitial Lamellae
A
- rings of calcified matrix surrounding the central canal
- layers of calcified matrix surrounding the entire bone (around the circumference of bone)
- ocalcified matrix that fills the space between osteons
3
Q
6) Lacuna
A
a space in the bone tissue found at the borders of adjacent lamellae and housing the osteocytes (plural - lacunae)
4
Q
7) Osteocyte
A
- a mature bone cell with processes; located in lacuna
5
Q
8) Volkman’s Canal (aka perforating canal)
A
- a horizontal channel with branches of nerves, blood and lymphatic vessels
6
Q
9) Endosteum
10) Periosteum
A
- a delicate membranous lining the medullary cavity, where bone growth, repair, and remodeling occur.
- a fibrous membrane covering the outer surface of bone; contains nerves, blood and lymphatic vessels; place of attachment for tendons and ligaments
7
Q
11) Sharpey’s Fibers
A
- connective tissue fibers that attach periosteum to bone
8
Q
12) Canaliculi (singular = canaliculus)
A
- tiny channels within the matrix that house cytoplasmic processes of osteocytes allowing them to communicate with each other and receive nutrients
