Bone Structure and Function Flashcards

1
Q

What is spongy bone?

A

A very porous type of bone that contains red bone marrow. It is usually located near the ends of ;ong bones surrounded by compact bone

Q

What is compact bone?

A

Forms the hard outer shell of bones. Contains tiny passages for veins, nerves, or bone repairing cells.

Q

Red bone marrow

A

-Found mostly in flat bones
-pelvis,scapula,skull and sternum
-stem cells grown into the red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets.
- Hematopiesis- generatiob of red blood cells

Q

Yellow bone marrow

A

-Found in medullary cavity of long bones
-Femur and humerus
-Contains mesenchymal stem cells
-Produce cartilage, fat and bones
-aids in storage of fats in cells called adipocytes

16
Q

Compression fracture

A

A fracture that occurs because of compression of the bone in the spine

17
Q

Transverse fracture

A

Break of bone at a right angle

18
Q

Oblique fracture

A

The bone breaks diagonally

19
Q

Spiral fracture

A

Occuring when a rotating force is applied along the axis of a bone

20
Q

Greenstick fracture

A

Fracture in a young, soft bone in which the bone bends and breaks

21
Q

Open fracture

A

Open wound

22
Q

Closed fracture

A

Non wound fracture

23
Q

Osteon

A

structural unit of compact bone

24
Q

Osteon parts

A

lamellae, lacunae, canaliculi, haversian canal

25
Haversian canal
one of a network of tubes running through compact bone that contains blood vessels and nerves
26
Canalicul (Compact bone)
Small channels that connect lacunae; allow for nutrient exchange and cellular communication between osteocytes.
27
Lacuna (compact bone)
spaces where osteocytes are trapped
28
Lamallae
rings around the central canal, sites of lacunae
29
trabeculae
supporting bundles of bony fibers in canellos (spongy) bone
30
Periosteum
Double layered connective tissue that covers and nourishes the bone. Fibrou layer osteogenic layer.
31
fibrous layer of peritoneum
-Outer layer made of Dense irregular connective tissue (collage) -where muscle attaches to bone -vascularized -It is also has nerves to sense pain when the tissue is damaged
32
Osteogenic layer of periosteum
-inner layer -osteogenic=bone creating -Contains osteoblasts. which are cells responsible for making the extracellular matrix of bone.
33
Foramen
Round or oval opening through a bone
34
epiphyseal plate
growth plate, made of cartilage, gradually ossifies
