Investigations for bone health
U&Es Calcium Phosphate Vitamin D TFTs ALP DEXA scan
What should prompt bone protection treatment
Fragility fracture in >75 year old needs treatment.
Investigation not necessary.
Management of osteoporosis
Smoking cessation Reduce alcohol intake Exercise Sun exposure Adcal D3 Bisphosphonates (alendronate or risedronate) Consider HRT for post menopausal women \+/- falls risk assessment
Advice for taking a bisphosphonate
Must be taken on empty stomach
Take 30 mins before breakfast with water only
Stay upright for at least 30 mins
Weekly dose
Don’t take iron or calcium supplements for at least 30 mins
