Bone Pathology 2 Flashcards
hyperparathyroidism
overactivity of parathyroid gland seeing excess parathyroidhormone released
results in increased osteoclast activity to release bone calcium
name 3 impacts of hyperparathyroidism
- secondary osteoporosis
- brown tumours
- metastatic calcification (kidney stones, salivary gland stones)
brown tumours
osteitis fibrosa cystica
can appear as large radiolucencies in mandible
consequence of hyperparathyroidism
what are the 3 types of hyperparathyroidism
primary - neoplasm, hyperplasia
secondary - hypocalcaemia e.g vit D deficiency
tertiary - chronic secondary leading to hyperplasia
primary hyperparathyroidism
most commonly seen in post menopausal women and due to parathyroid adenoma
pagets disease
metabolic bone disease seeing large but weak bones
monostotic vs polyostotic
mono - only affects one bone
poly - multiple bones
radiographic appearance of pagets disease
varied bone pattern - changes as disease progresses radiolucent/ mixed/ radiopaque
dentally - loss of lamina dura, hypercementosis, migration (due to bone enlargement)
name 3 benign bone tumours
osteoma
osteoblastoma
ossifying fibroma
name a bone malignancy
osteosarcoma
name 2 cementum lesions
cementoblastoma
cemento-osseous dysplasia
will teeth associated with cemento-osseous dysplasias be vital or non vital
vital
