What is epiphysis?
The ends of long bones
What is the diaphysis?
The long shaft of the bones
What is articular cartilage?
Thin layer of bluish cartilage covering each end of the bone
What is the periosteum?
Thin outer layer of the bone. Contains nerves and blood vessels that feed the bone
What is compact bone?
Hard and resistant to bending
Cancellous bone(spongy bone?)
Lies in layers within the compact bone. Has honeycomb appearance and gives bones their elastic strength
Medullary cavity?
Hollow space down the middle of the compact bone.
Contains bone marrow red marrow produces- red blood cells, yellow marrow- stores fat
Bone minerals?
Bones take up minerals from the diet.
Making them strong to withstand impacts.
(Calcium and phosphorus ensure strength)
The growth plate?
Area with bones grow in length, until a person reaches maturity and stops growing.
