Ala
(Ah-lah)
Latin for wing. Outward projections in the transverse process of the atlas (first neck bone) and large surface of the ilium region of the hipbone.
Condyle
(KON-dyl)
Greek for knuckle; large articulating prominences.
Cotyloid
(KOT-i-loid)
A cavity or deep articular depression (e.g., acetabulum).
Crest
A significant border or ridge.
Epicondyle
(EPI-KON-dyl)
An eminence (protuberance) at the articular end of a long bone, above or upon the condyle.
Facet
French for small face. Small articular surfaces covered with hyaline cartilage.
Fissure
(FISH-ur)
A narrow opening between two bones.
Foramen
(foh-RAY-men)
Latin for aperture. An opening or hole in a bone.
Fossa
(FOS-a)
Latin for cavity. A depression or small hollow.
Fovea
(FOH-vee-a)
Latin for pit. A shallow non-articulating depression such as is found in the head of the femur.
Head
A round articulating surface shaped like a ball.
Line
A ridge on a bone not as prominent as a crest.
Malleolus
(mal-LEY-oh-lus)
Latin for little hammer. The projection of bone as in the distal end of the tibia.
Process
Latin for proceed. Any prominent projection of bone as in a crest, trochanter, tuberosity, or spine.
Spine
Latin for thorn. A slender sharp projection.
